In celebration of International Women's Day, we gathered high school students together to encourage them to lift their voices through the written word. We heard from local female authors who spoke about their books, what inspires them to write and what it is like being a writer. Participants, both boys and girls, were encouraged to express themselves through writing and drawing. Many of the participants wrote about what it means to be a woman, or females who have encouraged and inspired them.
Girls and women encouraged each other to read and write and to make their voices heard! We heard the story of Malala Yousafzai, and were encouraged by this quote:
"We should not wait for someone else to come and raise our voice. We should do it by ourselves. We should believe in ourselves. One day you will see that all the girls will be powerful, all the girls will be going to school, and it is possible only by our struggle, only when we raise our voice." ~Malala
